2019: The year of the pile!

Happy 2019! I’ve mentioned this in the previous post, but I’ve been trying to not buy as much warhammer the last few months and it seems to be working. Abaddon is the last model that I finished recently and that marks the absolute end of the chaos miniatures I have in my posession.

Now that that’s finished I’ve even started digging in to “The Pile”!

Trust me, this was a lot worse a couple of months ago.

To the trained eye, the pile is actually pretty well organised:

So far I’m planning to go about this project in the following order:

  • Terrain (Blue pile). Terrain needs to go first. Thanks to all the work I’ve done these last few years I now have a large 40k and a large Heresy army that I can perfectly use for games in their current rulesets. The only reason I never play a game at home is because I lack proper terrain. If I finish this I can not only start playing some awesome games in my own house, but I’ll be able to take better pictures with nicer backgrounds as well.
  • Raven Guard and Sisters of Silence (Purple pile). These are models I’ve bought a long time ago and I’ve had the idea of a RG army with a small allied SoS force for a long time now. If I get the terrain done, finishing off my Ravens and painting up some Sisters will be a great reward for me.
  • Skaven (Orange pile). When my Raven Guard are completely done it will be good to switch gears and start painting up my Skaven again. It’s a lot of work and a lot of it is grinding, but grinding out simple color schemes will likely be a refreshing change after working on the RG and the sisters. I need to paint 80 clanrats, a start collecting pestilens box and a random assortment of old models that either need some TLC or a more permanent storage solution.
  • Eldar (Red pile). I can not paint so many armies in 1 year. My solution for the Eldar is to hand them over to Scar’s Miniature Madness. With all the money I’m not spending on warhammer this year I feel like I can afford to fix 1 problem the expensive way. I’m also really hyped for it. Owning a pro-painted 40k army that complements my chaos and has a totally different playstyle is something I’m really looking forward to.
  • Word Bearers and Militia (Purple again). Even the best plans do not survive contact with the enemy. Even if I somehow manage to get all of the above done before 2019 is done I will finally start working on my remaining Heresy stuff. It’s the project I’m saving for last because I want it to be a passion project. This is going to be the ultimate reward for finishing the other stuff. I will finally get to feel what it’s like to work on a single project without having something else in the back of my head that will need to get done after that. Also, so far, Heresy seems to work the best for me in terms of excitement and motivation. It’s something about the lore aspect and the long term aspect FW seems to have going with it that just really scratches my hobby itch. Hopefully I can start on these this year and actually start buying stuff again in 2020.

New (read: Old) Projects!

Hey Everyone!

We’re not dead yet here at DaanofWar! In fact, remember that Drake McBain from last post? Well, I ordered him an army:

There’s a full Press Ganger unit already basecoated, with some Kayazy Assassins, Wrong Eye & Snapjaw, an Underboss, a Bull Snapper and nana nana nana nana… Ragmaaan!

But before I finish those guys I’ve decided to get my Menoth force out of the way first. I’ve spent the first part of the evening soldering some custom chains on my Wracks and hopefully do some actual painting later tonight.

This is all the stuff I still need to do for Menoth. And also glue an arm back on my Talon, which is just for me personally I guess.

It’s going to be a busy week, but I’m going to try and keep this blog updated on my progress! The McBain army is intended to be used in tournaments in the near future so the sooner it’s done, the happier I’ll be.

Growing Strong

Once again, it’s been a while.

Last time, I talked about the new chaos book, a new campaign and how I was going to rebuild my army. Long story short: Dropped out of the campaign and the chaos marines are gathering dust.
My new focus during the past months has been my new Protectorate of Menoth warmachine army. As of today, everything in the army has been assembled and basecoated and some models even have their first coats of paint on them.

Kreos and a repenter (bases unfinished). I’m going to try and do a nice, pleasant floral pattern theme this time.

I’ve been having some games also as part of a Journeyman League with Niek (local press ganger/hobby hero). The games were really fun and made me want to get back into the Warmachine side of things. After I’m done with my Menoth, I plan on doing some work on my old Mercenary army in between projects as well.
To be honest, the past few months have been kind of a burn-out wargamingwise. I suppose everyone has them every once in a while, but it still makes me feels like crap when I think about all the unfinished armies and mini’s I still have lying around the appartment that I haven’t done anything with for over a month.

Not any more though. Weekly blog posts from now on.

I can do it, I can do it, I can do it.

Glimpse into the Golden Age: Battle 3

So, round 3 of the campaign totally went down last night.
I played against Koen this round, who was also sporting his chaos marines. The third mission was Big Guns Never Tire which means heavy support can claim objectives and are worth an extra victory point if you kill them. Koen used two defilers and a squad of 2 obliterators while I used 2 squads with 1 obliterator each. For our other units, Koen used a lash sorcerer, a regular squad with plasma and some khorne bezerkers. I used two regular squads with melta’s in rhino’s, a termicide unit, 5 lesser daemons and a daemon prince.
The battle as a whole was really wierd and had many wtf dice roll moments. A single chaos space marine squad killing off the daemon prince with a single rapid fire bolter volley was one of them and the khorne bezerkers killing off two out of three terminators with boltpistols was another. Luckilly, there were some good rolls for my side as well (the chaos marine unit running away after 2 plasma cannon shots and being able to blow up both defilers in 1 turn), so the battle ended in a draw with both armies almost completely wiped out.

Battlefield overview at turn 2. Interesting to note is the empty area in the center of the table where my daemon prince used to be.

I was pretty happy with the result anyway. My plan was to keep my obliterators on the objective and have my other guys disrupt and distract Koen’s army. So it was nice to have a plan actually work for a change. The downside was that pretty much everything had to die for that to happen. I’ll have to work on that.

Units that can shoot, ie.: obliterators, are apparently the shit in this edition.

Now, with the campaign update out of the way I’m going to try and get an actual painting session in tonight. Among the list of things to do are: glue back some bits that fell off the sorcerer and terminator lord, glue new bases underneath the raptors, assemble abaddon, paint the storm laser for the decimator and get serious about painting the raptors. If I can get all of this done, I’ll be a happy gamer. But first:
